Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about moving with SwiftMove.
Pricing & Estimates
How do you calculate the cost of a move?
For local moves, we charge by the hour based on the number of movers and truck size needed. Long-distance moves are priced based on the weight of your belongings and the distance traveled. We provide a detailed estimate after assessing your inventory, either in-person or virtually.
Are there any hidden fees?
No hidden fees, ever. Your quote includes all charges. We may add fees only if there are unexpected circumstances like long carry distances (over 75 feet from the truck), stairs without elevator access, or if you add items not in the original inventory. We always discuss any potential additional charges beforehand.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
For local moves, no deposit is required. For long-distance moves, we require a 25% deposit to secure your moving date, with the balance due upon delivery. All deposits are fully refundable if you cancel with at least 72 hours notice.
Scheduling & Timing
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking 2-4 weeks in advance, especially during peak season (May-September). However, we often accommodate last-minute moves based on availability. For long-distance moves, 3-4 weeks advance notice is ideal to secure your preferred dates.
Do you offer weekend or evening moves?
Yes! We operate 7 days a week, including holidays. Weekend moves are available at slightly higher rates due to demand. We also offer evening moves for commercial clients who need to minimize business disruption.
How long does a typical move take?
A studio or 1-bedroom apartment typically takes 2-4 hours. A 2-3 bedroom home averages 4-6 hours. Larger homes (4+ bedrooms) may take 6-10 hours or require multiple days. These estimates include loading, transport, and unloading.
Insurance & Protection
What happens if something gets damaged?
All moves include basic liability coverage of $0.60 per pound per item. We also offer Full Value Protection, which covers repair, replacement, or cash settlement for damaged items at their full value. We handle claims quickly, typically within 30 days.
Are your movers licensed and insured?
Absolutely. SwiftMove is fully licensed by the Department of Transportation and holds all required state and federal permits. We carry comprehensive liability and workers' compensation insurance. Our USDOT number and MC number are available upon request.
Services & Process
What items can't you move?
For safety reasons, we cannot transport hazardous materials (paint, chemicals, propane tanks), perishable foods, plants (for long-distance moves), pets, or important documents/valuables that should be personally transported. We'll provide a complete list of restricted items during your consultation.
Do I need to be present during the move?
We recommend being present at the start and end of your move to sign paperwork and direct where items should go. However, you can designate a trusted representative to be present on your behalf if you're unable to attend.
Should I tip the movers?
Tipping is not required but is always appreciated for excellent service. The industry standard is $20-40 per mover for a local move, or 5-10% of the total cost for long-distance moves. You can tip cash directly or add it to your final payment.
