Reimagining Hamlet for a Modern Audience
Victoria Sterling
Artistic Director
When we announced our spring production of Hamlet, the first question everyone asked was: "Why Hamlet again?" It is a fair question. Shakespeare's most famous tragedy has been staged thousands of times. But that ubiquity is precisely why it demands reimagination.
A Contemporary Mirror
Our production strips away the medieval Danish court and relocates the story to a modern corporate dynasty. The "kingdom" becomes a media empire. Succession anxiety, surveillance culture, and the performance of public grief -- these themes feel more urgent than ever.
The most powerful theater holds a mirror up to its audience. Hamlet was always about us. We are just making that explicit.
The Ensemble Approach
Rather than building the production around a single star, we have assembled an ensemble where every member of the company plays a vital role. The "Play within a Play" sequence features our entire cast in a breathtaking piece of physical theater.
Design as Storytelling
Set designer Marcus Chen has created a rotating glass structure that transforms from boardroom to bedroom to battleground. The transparency of the set -- everyone can see everything -- reinforces the play's obsession with surveillance and hidden truths.
Tickets are available now. I invite you to experience Shakespeare like you have never seen before. The curtain rises on March 15.
